Monthly Safety ThoughtSome interesting statistics in this month’s FAA Safety Briefing. The industry has been averaging about 2000 runway incursions per year for the last 6 years. Of that number 80% involve GA aircraft. While this is generally not an issue at non-towered fields, when we fly to a towered field with several runways & intersecting taxiways it can be a real issue. Be sure to study the layout of the field before you get there to become familiar with both the runways & taxiways. In 121 ops we always briefed the expected taxi route from landing to the gate when we briefed the approach. It works well.
